Privacy Policy
Last updated · 6 August 2026
Subtle is built privacy-first. In plain terms: your subscription data lives on your device and in your own iCloud account, and we run no servers that store your content. We do collect anonymous analytics and measure which ads bring new users, always without your subscription content, and you can turn it off. iOS asks once whether you allow tracking, and either answer works. This policy explains exactly what that means.
Who we are
Subtle (“the app”) is published by NorthStudio (“we”, “us”). You can reach us any time at support@northstud.io.
The short version
- We do not sell or share your personal information, and we never collect your subscription names, amounts, or notes.
- Your subscriptions are stored on your device and in your private iCloud database — we cannot see them.
- Screenshot scanning runs entirely on your device. Images and extracted text never leave it.
- We collect anonymous, aggregated usage analytics to improve the app — you can turn it off in Settings.
- We measure which ads bring new users. iOS asks once whether you allow tracking; either answer is fine, and turning analytics off stops it entirely.
- There is no account, no sign-up, and we never show ads inside the app.
Data you create in the app
The subscriptions you add — names, amounts, billing cycles, dates, categories, notes, and any custom icons or photos — are stored locally on your device using Apple’s on-device database. If you enable iCloud sync, this data is also stored in your own private iCloud database and synced across your Apple devices by Apple. It is end-to-end handled by Apple’s infrastructure and is never sent to NorthStudio. You can turn iCloud sync off at any time in Settings.
Screenshot scanning
When you scan a screenshot or import a PDF or CSV statement, all text recognition and parsing happens on your device using Apple’s Vision and PDFKit frameworks. No image, document, or recognized text is ever uploaded, transmitted, or seen by us or any third party.
The only network requests Subtle makes
Subtle is designed to stay offline as much as possible. There are exactly two outbound requests, neither of which carries personal or financial content:
- Exchange rates: once a day the app fetches currency conversion rates from open.er-api.com to convert subscriptions into your home currency. No data about you is sent — it is a simple request for public rates, cached on your device.
- Logos for custom services: if you add a service that is not in the bundled catalog, the app looks up its logo using only the bare website domain you provide (for example “example.com”), via Logo.dev and public favicon sources. Your subscription names, amounts, and notes are never sent. Logos are cached on your device for up to 90 days.
The 256 services in the built-in catalog already ship with their logos, so adding one of those requires no network request at all.
Analytics
To understand which features are useful and where the app can improve, Subtle uses Firebase Analytics, Mixpanel, and Microsoft Clarity. We only ever record anonymous, aggregated usage events — for example, which screen was opened or that a subscription was added. To group events from the same install, the app stores a random identifier on your device; it is not your name, email, or Apple ID, and it is never linked to your real identity.
Microsoft Clarity additionally records how the app is used — which screens you move between and where you tap — so we can see where people get stuck. These recordings carry the same anonymous identifier and never contain your subscription content.
We never send your subscription names, amounts, notes, screenshots, or any personal information; these are filtered out before any event leaves the app. You can turn analytics off any time in Settings, under Data and Privacy, which stops collection immediately.
Measuring ads
If you found Subtle through an ad, we want to know which ad worked so we do not waste money showing the wrong ones. To do that, the app shares install and purchase events — such as that the app opened, that a free trial started, or that a purchase was made, with the price — with Meta and Google.
Once, near the end of setup, iOS asks whether you allow tracking. If you allow it, these events carry Apple’s advertising identifier so the ad you saw can be matched to your install. If you decline, they are sent without it and matched only through Apple’s privacy-preserving SKAdNetwork. Either answer is fine and nothing in the app changes. You can change your answer any time in iOS Settings, under Privacy & Security, Tracking.
This never includes your subscription names, amounts, notes, or screenshots. The only price ever involved is the price of Subtle Pro itself. Apple’s privacy label classifies this measurement as “tracking”; it stops entirely when you turn analytics off in Settings.
What we never do
- We do not link to your bank or read your financial transactions.
- We do not scan your email.
- We do not show advertising inside the app.
- We do not sell or share your subscription data with data brokers or any third party.
Notifications
Renewal and trial reminders are scheduled and delivered locally on your device. If you allow notifications, we may also send occasional remote messages — such as a helpful product update — through Apple’s push service and Firebase Cloud Messaging. These never contain your subscription content, and you can turn notifications off in iOS Settings at any time.
Children’s privacy
Subtle is a general-audience utility and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Retaining and deleting your data
Because your data lives on your device and in your iCloud account, you are in full control. Delete any subscription in the app, use “Clear all subscriptions” in Settings, or delete the app to remove its local data. Data stored in iCloud can be managed or removed through your Apple device’s iCloud settings.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA to access, correct, or delete personal data a company holds about you. Since we do not hold your subscription data or any personal profile on our servers, there is nothing for us to retrieve or erase. If you have any question about your data, contact us at support@northstud.io.
Deleting your data
Your subscriptions live on your device and in your own iCloud, so you can delete them at any time in the app, and turn off analytics in Settings → Analytics. For a full breakdown and how to request deletion of anything associated with your use of Subtle, see our Data Deletion page.
Changes to this policy
If our practices change, we will update this page and revise the “last updated” date above. Material changes will also be reflected in the App Store privacy label before they take effect.
